what about an Android tablet with something like LineageOS? Some proprietary drivers and firmwares, though...

@ddipaola Yeah that's always an option. I could just pull the SIM card out of my Pixel XL or use my wife's old Nexus 5X on which I've already installed (and already doesn't have a SIM card).

Many Android apps tend to be heavily dependent on network access, but I could test it out. If there were an application, that would go a long way toward convincing me that's the right solution.

Before I was using a Bluetooth serial adapter with a serial TNC, but that setup wasn't portable. Even though the TNC had a battery, the adapter did not.
